Celebrating Juneteenth 2024: Freedom, Unity, and Culture

As we gather to celebrate Juneteenth 2024, we honor a pivotal moment in American history – a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States.

While this holiday has been recently given the National Holiday title, Juneteenth, represents the true independence of African Americans and is a powerful reminder of the enduring fight for freedom and equality.

A Brief History of Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas. They brought the news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved people were now free – a full two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. This day came to be known as Juneteenth also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, or Emancipation Day and symbolized a new dawn of liberation and justice.

Why Juneteenth Matters

Juneteenth is not just a historical event; it's a day of reflection, education, and celebration of African American culture and resilience. It's a time to recognize the progress made and the work that still lies ahead. By celebrating Juneteenth, we acknowledge the strength, perseverance, and contributions of Black communities throughout history and today.
